The Optimal Solution for Decentralized Island Water Supply: RO Containerized Seawater Desalination System

The containerized seawater desalination system offers the optimal solution for remote islands, coastal communities and offshore platforms that have long relied on ship-based water transportation and rainwater collection — methods severely constrained by harsh marine conditions, resulting in poor supply reliability and high overall costs.

Traditional thermal desalination processes rely on high-temperature heat sources and large-scale civil infrastructure, requiring long construction periods and high energy consumption. These limitations make them unsuitable for decentralized island water supply scenarios with limited space and weak infrastructure.

Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) membrane technology utilizes ambient-temperature physical separation to achieve desalination. With low system energy consumption and a high degree of automation, it is highly compatible with island operating conditions and has become the mainstream technology for decentralized water supply. Containerized desalination systems provide the optimal deployment solution for this application.

Reverse Osmosis Process Flow and Permeate Quality

The entire system is specifically designed to address the unique characteristics of island water sources — high turbidity, high algae content and salinity fluctuations. The treatment process consists of four core stages:

The pretreatment unit adopts a graded configuration of “intake screening + multi-media filtration”, progressively removing sediment, algae and colloidal particles. An integrated chemical dosing system is equipped to simultaneously add flocculants, scale inhibitors, disinfectants and reducing agents, controlling membrane fouling risks at the source.

The cartridge filtration unit is equipped with 5 μm precision filter cartridges to remove fine suspended residues, preventing irreversible membrane damage caused by particle abrasion under high-pressure operating conditions.

The reverse osmosis desalination unit serves as the core stage. The high-pressure pump provides a stable operating pressure of 40-70 bar, supplying the driving force required for reverse osmosis membrane filtration. The seawater desalination membranes achieve a system salt rejection rate of ≥99%, reducing the permeate TDS stably to below 500 mg/L.

The post-treatment unit adjusts the permeate pH to 7–8.5, enhances mineral content and performs disinfection. The treated water is then delivered through a constant-pressure water supply system, enabling 24-hour continuous water supply. The water quality fully complies with drinking water quality standards.

Introduction of Core Reverse Osmosis Membrane Products

Reverse osmosis membrane elements are the core components of the entire system, directly determining the permeate quality, operating stability and service life.

This system is equipped with SHUIYI’s dedicated seawater reverse osmosis membranes for island applications, made of a highly cross-linked aromatic polyamide composite material. The membranes are specifically developed for complex island operating conditions, offering significant performance advantages. The membrane elements deliver a rated salt rejection rate of up to 99.8%, effectively removing salts and low-molecular-weight impurities from seawater, ensuring stable and compliant permeate quality.

With a maximum pressure tolerance of up to 80 bar, the membranes can withstand seawater quality fluctuations and operating load shocks, making them suitable for island environments with temperatures ranging from 5-45 °C. The membranes demonstrate excellent chemical cleaning resistance with a wide pH tolerance range of 1.0-13.0, delivering outstanding flux recovery performance after acid and alkali cleaning.

In addition, the membrane surface undergoes proprietary anti-fouling modification, effectively inhibiting microbial adhesion and organic pollutant deposition. Under standard operation and maintenance conditions, the membrane service life can reach more than 3 years with a low long-term performance decay, significantly reducing operating and maintenance costs throughout the lifecycle.

Core Advantages of Integrated Containerized Desalination System

The system adopts factory prefabrication and standardized containerized packaging, offering outstanding advantages for island applications. With high deployment efficiency, the system requires only on-site pipeline and electrical connections before commissioning. It can be put into operation within 7–15 days, adapting well to the limited construction conditions on islands.

The system features flexible and reusable capacity expansion capabilities, supporting both independent operation of a single unit and parallel connection of multiple units. The production capacity can be adjusted according to variations in water demand.

The entire unit undergoes enhanced anti-corrosion treatment, enabling it to withstand the high-temperature, high-humidity and high-salt-fog island corrosive environments. With superior durability and reliability, the system provides a stable and sustainable freshwater supply solution for island livelihood, development and construction.
